NKP 765 Autumn Spectacular

Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 number 765 is the star of this show which features 1986 action on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway trackage. First we enjoy 765 on the famous "New River Train" from Huntington to Hinton in late October. This turned out to be the last time the engine was turned on the Hinton turntable, before it was removed. The action is spectacular combining fast-paced action as 765 puts on a great show in the fall colors. After those trips, we see a one-way trip from Huntington to Cincinnati. This trip features some very nice pacing scenes along highway 23 north of Russell, Kentucky. Then the video wraps-up with a round-trip to Russell, Kentucky along the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio. If you like great steam action with a heavy train, and a good sounding engine, this is the video ticket for you. Also see our 2765 on the C&O, Steam in Huntington, and American Steam-Vol 1 for more on this engine.

N&W 1218: Rebuilt and Roanoke Bound

1987 was a big year for steam in the eastern United States as Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 was operated once again. As early as 1986 we visited the Norfolk Southern Steam Shop in Birmingham, Alabama to see the progress of the restoration, and the front engine is just being fitted with parts at this time, and there is much yet to do. Then we are back in Birmingham in the spring of 1987 for the test run to Wilton, Alabama with a freight train. Its the first time a Class A 1200 series Norfolk and Western engine has steamed since 1959. Shortly thereafter we are again in Birmingham as we follow 1218 on a short passenger train as it makes the one-way trip for 3 days to Roanoke for its coming home celebration. In April 1987 the inaugural trips from Roanoke to Bluefield are operated, and then the following day there is a trip to Lynchburg. There is a wealth of footage here that we have to consider vintage now that 1218 and the NS steam program were terminated in 1994. At this writing 1218 is still owned by NS and its future is less than certain.

Cincinnati 611

Norfolk and Western Class J, 4-8-4 number 611 steams from Cincinnati to Danville on a round-trip in 1986 followed by a round-trip to Portsmouth, Ohio. These trips sponsored by the Cincinnati Railroad Club marked the first time 611 had run a trip to Portsmouth, and that trip carried over 1300 riders, a record for an NS excursion.

Our coverage begins before the excursions as we shot some cab scenes of 611 en route to Cincinnati on the Portsmouth line. Then a few of these scenes were interwoven into the actual excursion runs to break-up the trips. There is minimal narration on this video, as we always believed in letting the engines do the talking on our steam videos. The Danville trip features the assault on Erlanger Hill, then some 65 mph hour running. On the Portsmouth trip there is some beautiful weather, and we see good action on the Batavia Hill, and Peebles hill plus many other locations. This video was done in conjunction with the Cincinnati RR Club, and artist John Maggard helped create our jacket which resembles the N&W timetables of the 1950s.

Cincinnati 1218

Norfolk and Western Class A, 2-6-6-4 number 1218 stars in this video, which was the first roundtrips operated from Cincinnati with the recently restored locomotive. A bonus is another trip sponsored by the Cincinnati RR Club in the spring of 1987 with 611 hauling an excursion to Portsmouth, which is also on the video. Then we see shots of 1218 being run to Cincinnati for the trips, and some of the preparations. The weekend trips in September featured 2 roundtrips on the former Southern Railway line from Cincinnati to Danville, Kentucky with 1218 pulling a 25 coach train with ease. The 1218 does work fairly hard on the grade though. There are some nice scenes, such as the broadside of 1218 passing the horse farm in Lexington, and the long-distant view crossing High Bridge. There is also a short cab ride sequence right behind the engineer, Bob Saxton, at the photo runby at Burgin, Kentucky. There are also a few pacing scenes of this monster locomotive which for a time was considered the largest operational engine in the world. The 1218 only operated from 1987 until 1991.

This is a great tape of 1218 action, and the 611 coverage is a nice added bonus.

2765 on the C&O

In 1993, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 was transformed with a few modifications into a C&O 2-8-4 as both Lima-built locomotive types were similar. We begin with a brief background segment with Rich Melvin explaining some of the changes. Then the action begins, as 2765 departs Cincinnati and historic Cincinnati Union Terminal for a trip to Russell, Kentucky and return. There is a nice sequence pacing the engine over the C & O (road & Railroad) bridge crossing the Ohio River, and several nice speedy runpast on this cold damp day. Then on the return trip we are given a rare treat-a cab ride from Russell for several miles and the speedometer hits 60 mph, something rarely seen on steam in the United States these days. After the Cincinnati trip, we see 2765 on a one-way trip to Huntington, where it operates on the New River Train in October. These are the usual fine trips, with great weather and fall colors. The 2-8-4 looks good and sounds great as it blasts along on the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway trackage now part of CSX. The tape wraps-up with a lovely fall color vista shot at Hawks Nest overlook, deep in the New River Gorge. This is one of our favorite videos and we think you will like it also. This was the last time the engine operated before being stored.

614 Coal Trains

Picture the scene, cold, wintry, and steam on the mainline of the Chesapeake & Ohio. That's what it was in January 1985 as former C&O 4-8-4 Number 614 was operated between Huntington and Hinton, West Virginia on real coal trains. They were doing this to test the feasibility of producing a modern coal burning locomotive. Despite the outcome which produced no such engine, the month long runs were the closest thing to what steam freight service was like on U.S. Railroads since the late 1950s. This was our first U.S. video (first were our South Africa videos) and it is not nearly as professional as our newer ones, and there is no voice narration. However, on-screen graphics and a printed information sheet give you plenty of useful information. What there is plenty of however, is thundering exhaust and steam clouds in the cold January air. We spent 6 different days videotaping these runs, and you'll see loaded trains eastbound from Huntington and 90-car empty trains westbound, usually the following day. Most of our coverage is between Huntington and Thurmond. There are many neat scenes like the day 614 ran several hours early, on a day it snowed, and we were one of the few people to photograph the event. On another morning the huge door jammed on the paint shop where 614 slept overnight, and the door had to be torched as we watch this, and 614 squeeze out before making the run on a coal train. This was the last time 614 operated on the C&O, although Ross Rowland has the engine operational once again in the east.

4501 25th Anniversary

Former Southern Railway 2-8-2 number 4501 is the star of this program as we begin with historic film footage of 4501 as engine 12 on the Kentucky and Tennessee Railroad in the early 1960s. Then we see 4501 in early Southern Steam Excursion service along with a few other Southern engines. The majority of the program was shot in 1991 and includes a short freight run from Salisbury, North Carolina to Asheville including scenes at the Loops on the Old Fort line. Then we follow the train to Knoxville, which includes a cab ride from Newport, Tennessee to Knoxville. Other trips include some coverage of the return trip of an excursion from Oneida to Chattanooga and some scenes of a southbound portion of a Cincinnati to Lexington run. The 25th Anniversary part of the title stems from the 25th Anniversary of the Southern and Norfolk Southern Steam Excursion program which took place in Chattanooga in October / November, 1991. We enjoy a 4501 trip west from Chattanooga, then the capper is the tripleheader as 4501 leads 611 and 1218 on a run. Later they all split and we get a few more shots of 4501 on a passenger train. This was interesting as about 3 years later the NS steam program was disbanded, and this was one of the last runs of 1218 since it went in the shop that winter, and never ran again. 4501 is privately owned and may operate again in the future. This tape has something for all steam fans to enjoy.

Memories of Norfolk & Western 611

In 1994 the Norfolk Southern steam program was terminated and Class J, 4-8-4 # 611 may never operate again. However, our video will document some of the last runs of this magnificent steam locomotive as it steams through southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky between 1992 and 1994. You'll 611 work hard on the steep grades such as Erlanger Hill just south of Cincinnati in northern Kentucky, plus the steep grades at Batavia, Peebles and Seaman on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth line. We'll see many different excursion trains, plus some one-way moves that includes a short freight train pulled by 611. There are also scenes of 611 being turned on the Portsmouth wye, for the last time, and pacing shots along side 611 on the Portsmouth to Columbus line. We videotaped steam in these areas many times so you can be sure we captured the best locations to show 611 working hard and providing a good show. There is also a special guest visitor on the tape that we will leave as a surprise to those who purchase this tape. The jacket art shows 611 going away as it approaches the Southern Bridge in Cincinnati by Cincinnati artist John Maggard. Great steam action throughout this collectors edition will provide a lifetime of pleasure and "Memories of Norfolk and Western 611".

American Steam Volume 1

Join us for a variety-filled video which covers 7 different engines in one video. Its like 7 mini videos. Lines and engines included are: Eureka Springs and North Arkansas RR 2-6-0 #1, an old wood-burner which we see both lineside and from the tender of the engine. Pennsylvania Railroad Class K-4 4-6-2 #1361 on this first run from Altoona on the former PRR line to Tyrone and Bellefountain, Pennsylvania, The Nebraska Midland Railroad at the Stuhr Pioneer Museum, in Grand Island, Nebraska. Operating was former White Pass & Yukon 2-8-0 number 69, which is now out of service. Hocking Valley Railroad 2-8-0 #33 is seen between Nelsonville and Logan, Ohio pulling a Santa Claus train. Whitewater Valley Railroad in Indiana operated a 2-6-2 #100 on a fall trip to Metamora and we see a December trip with a dusting of snow, which turned out to be the last time this engine ran, due to boiler time expiring. Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #587 makes her first public appearance since restoration doing a short break-in run, then a pair of excursions from Indianapolis to Logansport, Indiana. Finally we wrap in up with scenes of Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 on 2 days of excursions roaring along between Huntington and Hinton, WV on the New River Trains in 1987, during fall colors. Cover painting for the tape was done by artist Mike Danneman. Great Variety of engines from 1986-1988.

L&N 152 in Kentucky and Beyond

This was our first 152 video which featured the 1905 built 4-6-2 on its first excursions from Louisville to Lexington in 1986 after making a break-in run in 1985. Also there was an October 1986 trip to Lexington, Kentucky as well. Several interesting scenes such as Jett Hill, Frankfort Tunnel, and running through the street and past old structures at Midway. Then we follow a 5-day trip to Appalachia, Virginia, which includes scenes of the Hagans tunnel, and unique mainline switchback. This is an area that hadn't seen a steam engine in years and hasn't since. There are some interesting scenes south of Corbin including a neat shot at Williamsburg, Kentucky passing the depot in a downpour of rain. The 152 no longer operates on the mainline, but does operate periodically at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, Kentucky on the former Louisville and Nashville trackage owned by the museum. Hard to believe all this was 14 years ago.

L&N 152 Suspended in Time

Louisville and Nashville 4-6-2 #152 is one of the oldest (1905) operating Pacific type steam locomotives in the United States, and is currently run at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, Kentucky. However back in the late 1980s 152 was a mainline excursion engine in Kentucky. The focus of this video is a series of operations with 152 on the TTI (Trans-Kentucky Transportation Inc). First we see a VIP trip run with 152 and 4 coaches, but no diesel assist. Then we (Greg Scholl Video) did a photographers special charter train with 152 and three heavyweight coaches, all lettered Louisville & Nashville. There are some timeless scenes on this former L&N line like running through the street at Carlisle, Kentucky with a freight depot on one side and a passenger depot on the other. There are two wig-way crossing signals (now history), tunnels, bridges, and various buildings. After the photo specials we see regular public excursions on this 50 mile line (with a diesel to assist this longer train) and there is more great action. If all this wasn't enough we show some highlights of other 152 runs in both 1987 and 1988 including trips from Louisville, and Cincinnati. On one trip we ride the cab from Frankfort up Jett Hill to Midway, Kentucky. This is a fine locomotive and the locations that 152 operated in make the train seem suspended in a time warp. These 1988 trips were the last mainline trips for 152.

Steam in Huntington

Watch the dramatic action of two big mainline steam engines operating side-by-side as the feature attraction of the 1991 NRHS convention in Huntington, West Virginia. You'll enjoy the incredible sight of Pere Marquette 2-8-4 #1225 on a passenger train, running pilot to pilot with a similar engine, Nickel Plate 2-8-4 #765. We covered the whole event which includes 1225 and 765 doubleheading on a freight from Lima to Cincinnati, from Cincinnati to Huntington on another freight along the CSX (former C&O), and the convention trips. Also in attendance was Norfolk and Western Class A #1218 which operated a round-trip excursion from Kenova to Portsmouth, Ohio, and another one from Kenova to Iaeger, West Virginia on the former N&W line. The side-by-side trip with 1225 and 765 is covered with scenes from 4 different videographers. One was on the train, two were linside, and we obtained footage from a TV cameraman who was in the cab of 1225 during one of the runbys. This is an awesome spectacle, and no exaggeration! The following day we see the pair doublehead the train to Hinton and through the New River Gorge. For diesel fans there is also a few minutes of the last Western Maryland lettered diesel GP40 #6573 on a circle tour of Huntington. These 1218 trips also turned out to be the last ones 1218 made west of Roanoke, as 1218 ran for the last time a few months later. This is one of our personal favorite videos, as the side-by-side and whole event was special.

Norfolk Southern Steam Volume One

Experience the excitement of 4-8-4 Class J #611 and 2-6-6-4 #1218 on former Norfolk and Western trackage once more. This "Pure N&W" tape covers these locomotives throughout the system from Roanoke to Cincinnati and north from Portsmouth on the Columbus line. You'll enjoy highlights of trips shot between 1987 and 1989 on many different operating days. The 1987 NRHS convention in Roanoke is highlighted with 611 on a passenger train and 1218 on a coal train as the two trains run side-by-side as they climb Christiansburg grade westbound. Lineside scenes are accompanied by on-train scenes. Doubleheaders are also shown with the two engines as well as countless scenes of the engines separately on other trips such as the 1988 Independence Limited with 1218, 611 on the Portsmouth line in 1989, 1218 on the Columbus line in 1987 and 1988, 611 on a run from Portsmouth to Bluefield for the first time since 1959, and more. There is some truly exciting action at some of the best locations along the Norfolk Southern (former N&W). This period was considered the pinnacle of the Norfolk Southern Steam Program, with both engines in top form at the same time. This is a nice souvenir of the period and some of the finest steam action anywhere.

Norfolk Southern Steam Volume Two

This second volume is more of a variety tape in that it covers lines and engines other than just former Norfolk and Western livery. One of the highlights of the video is the four day Independence Limited from Bellevue to Roanoke with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 double-heading with N&W 611. Engine 587 led the first day to Muncie on former Nickel Plate trackage, and 611 led the way the following days with overnight stops in Cincinnati, and Bluefield before climbing Christiansburg grades west slope and arriving in Roanoke where we see 1218 at Shafer's Crossing Roundhouse in the foreground as the doubleheader goes by. Then a few weeks later 587, 611 and 1218 triplehead to Lynchburg as part of a one-way move to position the engines for further trips. This is a rare sight indeed, especially at Blue Ridge, VA. Next we see a trip from Lexington, KY with Louisville and Nashville 4-6-2 #152 (leased by NS) on a trip to Stearns, Ky. This unusual trip had engine 611 for the return trip to Lexington in the afternoon. You'll also see N&W 611 on selected shots on the Cincinnati to Lexington, Kentucky section, and interesting set of comparison shots showing 1218 and 611 at the exact same locations on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth (Peavine line) route on different trips. There is a ton of unique material here and a very exciting show of never to repeated performances.

Norfolk Southern Steam Freights

As the third tape in our Norfolk Southern Steam collection we have a very unique video showing some of the NS engines on freight trips. Many times the engines would be sent to the next city for a trip, and the excursion coaches would already be there from another trip, and the engines would need a train for braking purposes. Over a 3 year period (1987-1989) we collected scenes of a few such trips. N&W 4-8-4 class J #611 pulls a freight from Birmingham to Chattanooga, and along the way picks up a diesel that is not operating properly on a southbound train, making for an interesting situation. Also you'll see shots of 611 at the Birmingham shops and yard. Louisville and Nashville 4-6-2 #152 is seen with a caboose after switching with 611 in Kentucky(that is on volume 2). Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #587 is seen pulling a short train of Bricks on the Southern Mainline in Virginia. Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 number 1218 is seen pulling a mixed freight from the Portsmouth, Ohio yard and heading north on the Columbus line in 1988, and on an empty coal train from Roanoke westbound in 1987. Again, these scenes are not likely to be repeated. The action is very good.

Great Steam Trains Volume 1

Like all the Great Steam Trains videos the idea is to have 4 separate steam segments. In this volume we head to Indiana for Nickel Plate 2-8-2 #587 operating from Frankfort to Muncie, Indiana on former Nickel Plate trackage. Next we visit the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire and enjoy former CN 0-6-0 number 7470 in the fall colors of New England. Besides the steam train action along the line you see the fabulous Depot, roundhouse, and turntable operations. Next we see an interesting segment whereby the engineer and fireman of Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 explain all the controls, and how to operate the big Class A locomotive. Bob Saxton and Dwight Browning do the honors. There are a couple of runbys to show the engine in action, but you can find much of that in other videos of ours. Our final segment is very unusual with Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 #611 on a Cincinnati to Portsmouth run in 1990. On the steep Peebles Hill a rainstorm hits and 611 slips and stalls on the grade. The steam crew sands the rails by hand (seldom seen today on mainline runs), and the 611 inches forward before gaining enough adhesion to continue to the summit. This was something you rarely get to witness. Thereafter 611 usually had a diesel assist on most Cincinnati to Portsmouth runs. This is an interesting mix of steam subjects with lots of action.

Great Steam Trains Volume 2

The first half of the video contains a visit to the Salem and Hillsborough Railroad in New Brunswick, Canada. This remote outpost contained two seldom seen steam engines, Canadian National 4-6-0 #1009, and Canadian Pacific 4-4-0 #29. There is action on their line to Salem which includes a wooden trestle and a steep little grade. #1009 is even operated on a short freight for our cameras, and several runbys are done with this vintage 4-6-0. One of the real treasures though was #29, one of the oldest engines in North American, having been built in 1889. We see a few runs of #29 in passenger service, including scenes around the yard. Sadly this engine was burned badly in a shop fired that destroyed many pieces of equipment (1009 was outside), and our video was the last ever shot of this classic 4-4-0. The engine is now on display at the Canadian Pacific headquarters in Calgary. Our third engine segment is a Baseball special as Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 pulls a train from St. Albans, West Virginia to Cincinnati, Ohio and return. We see shots on Scary Hill, along the Ohio and from the Union Terminal Tower A. The fourth and final segment shows 2-6-2 #11(Former Reader RR) running for the Kentucky Central group on the former Louisville & Nashville Line (now TTI) from Paris to Maysville, Kentucky in 1990. This was a Santa Claus train and a cold clear day on this 50 mile line makes for a nice show of steam and sound. Volume two is also very exciting, and historic, as most of these steamers are not running.

Great Steam Trains Volume 3

This volume continues the tradition of great steam action and variety. First we witness a trip from Portsmouth, Ohio to Williamson, West Virginia with Norfolk and Western Class J 4-8-4 #611. This trip was in 1992, and also featured a dedication with a special ceremony. Then we head west for a few days of doubleheaders on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad from Chama to 10,015 foot Cumbres Pass in the Rockies. These engines have been battling the 4% grade for nearly 75 years and always put on a great show. The next segment features the short-lived Virginia Central Railroad operating a pair of former Canadian Pacific G5 4-6-2s. Engines 1286 and 1238 doublehead a passenger train in the fall colors between Charlottesville and Clifton Forge, Virginia. We don't have a lot of scenes, but there are two or three real winners you will really like. Our fourth and final segment features Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 #261 on the Famous New River excursions from Huntington, West Virginia through the New River Gorge region. We'll enjoy fast running and cold weather for great steam affects and a lovely scene from Hawks Nest Overlook to close-out the video. Again great variety.
