South African Railways 4-8-4 #3511, The Last Condensor (Class 25) on the Daily De Aar-Kimberley Passenger at Poupan in July 1984. These engines were built with large tenders and enlarged smokeboxes to help recylce water in the arid regions of South Africa. After the most arid regions (south of De Aar) were deiselized, most of the Class 25 engines were removed from service or modifield losing their condensing parts. Regular 4-8-4's are class 25NC, or non-condensing. #3511 is the last operating Condensing engine in operation. |
